En vacker vy från vårt stora vandringspaket

The large hiking holiday offers amazing views as well as interesting culture experiences. It also gives you the perfect opportunity to enjoy nature and its serenity.

  • 5 days/6 nights
  • Start Fryksta, Finish Sunne
  • Easy to moderate
  • Daily distance: 10-15 kilometers (max 4 hours)

After a good night’s sleep in a hostel, your hike along Lake Fryken begins. Your mobile phone is prepared with a GPS smartphone app that will help you find the right route, and your backpack is filled with coffee, water and lunch. Let the journey begin!

The hiking trail stretches on paths and gravel roads, along moors, through deep forests and open landscape. Should you need to cool down, there will be several opportunities to take a swim in any of the four lakes you will pass. And if you are lucky, you might make a curious fox’s acquaintance – or maybe an elk’s.

Alma Löv Museum and Selma Lagerlöf’s Mårbacka are interesting breaks on the way.

You stay in typical Swedish cottages along the way. In the evenings there will be time to enjoy traditional Swedish food as well as the serenity of the long bright summer evenings. At this point it is nice to just relax and feel a pleasant weariness spread into the muscles. Taking a sauna or getting a massage is optional.

From Mårbacka to Sunne, which is the last distance of your journey, is optional to go by bicycle. At Selma Spa you will be able to enjoy a nice dinner and breakfast buffet, as well as access to the spa.

Route

Transfer from Kil’s train station or from Karlstad Airport

One night in a hostel at Fryksta, Kil

Fryksta-Nilsby

Hike along a part of a pilgrim trail in beautiful, open woodland, on nice forest and gravel roads. On the heights, before you reach Nilsby, Nilsby Bridge appears with its red arches on the left side. The bridge was built in 1997 and received the “Beautiful roads’ award” that same year. Spend one night in a cottage in Nilsby.

Nilsby-Humletorp

After a good night’s sleep, the hike continues to beautiful Hagudden, where you have the opportunity to go for a nice swim. Today, walking is easy, and the route stretches along forest and gravel roads. At Humletorp, beautifully located on Lake Visten, you can take a wooden fired heated sauna on the shore (this is optional). Spend one night here in a cottage.

Humletorp-Smedsby

The route to Smedsby stretches along paths and forest roads, passing two lakes and a moor. On the shore of Lake Skacksjön, is a nice spot for you to have your lunch. After about three hours, the landscape widens, and the hike continues on a gravel road to Smedsby. On the shore of Lake Fryken, there are eleven barrows from the later Bronze Age, well worth visiting at dusk. Spend one night in a cottage. Option to book a sauna or a massage.

Smedsby-Södra Ås

From the cottage, there is merely a short walk to Alma Löv Museum. Here, you will have plenty of time to visit the pavilions and the exhibitions in the main building. Then, the hike continues north to Prästbol. Here you can visit Östra Ämtervik’s church and Selma Lagerlöf’s family grave. Proceed along Selma Lagerlöf church road until you reach Södra Ås, where you spend one night in a cottage.

Södra Ås-Sunne

The last day’s hike takes you up to Åsberget, which has a beautiful view over Lake Fryken and Lake Gårdsjön. To reach Mårbacka, you will walk along the trail of Back-Kajsa. Back-Kajsa was Selma Lagerlöf’s nanny and here you will pass what is left of her cottage. At Mårbacka a guided tour of the memorial estate is waiting. Finish this day with a lovely cycling tour to Sunne and Selma Spa Hotel. Enjoy a well-deserved spa experience with access to sauna, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, gym and workout classes, as well as dinner and breakfast buffet.

Check-out from the hotel at 12 pm. Transfer to Kil’s train station or to Karlstad Airport.

The practical matters

We transfer you from/to Kil’s train station, alternatively transfer from/to Karlstad Airport. We also transfer your luggage door-to-door. The cottages accommodate 2-3 people per room. In each cottage you find food for breakfast and dinner. The dinners will be partly prepared and lunch packs are already made for you. Thermos for coffee or tea will also be available.

You will have access to a GPS smartphone app, which will show you the daily route in detail. There will also be a map in each cottage, showing you the next day’s route.

Check-out from the accommodations is at 10 pm at the latest. Check-in is at 3 pm. We will clean all accommodations as well as change towels and bed linen. If you would like to be environmental friendly and you are fine with using the same towels and bed linen more than once, you will get a 200 SEK discount. We will in that case transfer the used towels and bed linen to the next accommodation.

The food

The dinner menus,  typical traditional swedish dishes with a touch of Värmland, vary depending on the access to ecological and locally produced food, which we strive to offer.

When booking your cycling holiday, you will have the opportunity to choose meals from a menu. These meals consist of for example, smoked salmon, elk or herring. The dinners are partly prepared but you have to do some easy cooking, like boiling potatoes and make a salad. We will do everything to keep your effort in the kitchen to an absolute minimum.

The breakfast items are moved from door-to-door. If you run out of something, we will refill it for you. You find prepared lunch packs for next day’s hike in the cottage.

If you are a vegetarian or need any other special diet, please let us know when you book.

Hiking and equipment

The distance is 10-15 kilometers a day, and the duration is maximum 4 hours a day. The hiking is easy to moderate with no large differences in altitude. In the forest the ground could sometime be wet und uneven. Sporadically it could be a little bit rocky with some loose and rough stones. In the countryside, on grevel roads the hiking is easy.

Bring your own backpack and water bottle.

Remember to bring clothes suitable for heat, wetness and cold. You will keep driest with synthetic and woolen materials.

Hiking boots should be waterproof and should fit well – the heal should keep in place, and you should be able to wriggle your toes. Do not forget to use the boots a couple of times before you go on a hike. An abrasion could ruin the entire hiking experience.
