This is how a typical day can look like

You have got a itinerary and a map to help you find the way. To make it even easier your mobile phone is prepared with a GPS smartphone app that will help you find the right route. Your backpack is filled with coffee, water and lunch. Let the journey begin!

The hiking trail stretches on paths and gravel roads, along moors, through deep forests and open landscape. If you are lucky, you might make a curious fox’s acquaintance – or maybe a moose’s. You will soon find yourself hiking in a comfortable pace, where you can let go of the everyday life worries. Nature’s beauty, visual impressions, sounds and scents – everything helps you relax.

Slowly, a feeling of total presence and peace is emerging in the silence of nature. Should you need to cool down, there will be several opportunities to take a swim in any of the lakes you will pass. Then stop along the road for a rest and enjoy the lunch you brought along. The food usually tastes so much better in the open!

You walk along the grounds where Selma Lagerlöf found inspiration for many of her novel characters. A wonderful break on the journey will be a visit to her memorial farm Mårbacka where a guided tour awaits. Once at the overnight cabin it feels good to breathe out and rest your legs. A lovely dinner, perhaps with local hot-smoked salmon taste good after a full day’s hike. After a great night’s sleep, new adventures await!

Cultural visits

Lars Lerin Art Gallery
Lars Lerin’s Art Gallery is located in the converted Sandgrund restaurant in Karlstad. There is also a café and a guest hall where specially invited guests exhibit.

The Alma Löv Museum
The Alma Löv Artmuseum in Smedsby, Östra Ämtervik consists of about ten pavilions in the countryside. In the main building there are both a theater, exhibition halls and a café.

Selma Lagerlöf’s memorial estate Mårbacka is located 9 km south of Sunne. The farm is preserved in the same condition as it was at Selma Lagerlöf’s demise in 1940. Selma Lagerlöf was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1909 and the first woman in the Swedish Academy. Guided tour is offered. There is also a café here.

Deje old power station
At the river Klarälven in Deje lies the old power station which today is an art gallery. The 11 m high ceiling height together with much of the original interior creates a special atmosphere around the exhibitions. It also offers music events, an organic café and lunch service.

The food

The dinner menus are typical traditional swedish dishes with a touch of Värmland. As we strive to offer ecological and locally produced food the menus may vary depending on access of suitable groceries.

When booking your holiday, you will have the opportunity to choose meals from a menu. These meals consist of for example, smoked salmon, meat from moose or herring. Please also notify us if you need any special diet.

In the cottages there will be food for breakfast, lunch, coffee (“fika”) and dinner. You prepare the lunchpackages by yourself when having breakfast. Homemade cakes are available for “fika” and fruits and nuts for extra energy. In the first cottage you will find a thermos which you use during the rest of your holiday.

We have prepared the dinners as far as it´s  possible. Most often they just need to be warmed up. Some dishes are served cold, for example the hot smoked salmon. We strive to make your time in the kitchen as easy as possible. Your effort could be to boil potatoes and make a salad.

Surroundings and equipment

The hiking distance is 10-15 kilometers a day, maximum 4 hours a day. The hikes are easy to moderate and with little differences in altitude.

You hike mainly on paths and forest roads. Sometimes the terrain is uneven and wet. Stones- and rock parties could occur. The hiking on the countryside is mainly on grevel roads but some shorter distances on country roads too.

For the hiking you have your own backpack and water bottle. Bring clothes suitable for heat, wetness and cold. The best way to stay dry is to use synthetic and woolen materials.

We recommend that you use hiking boots. They should be waterproof and fit well – and keep the heel in place. You should also be able to wriggle your toes. Use your new boots somestimes before coming as a blister could ruin the entire hiking experience.
