We will meet up outside of Lars Lerin Art Gallery on Sandgrund, Karlstad at 11 am.
You receive bicycle and helmet, a detailed information pack including route maps, your lunch pack and admission tickets. After the visit to the art gallery, the cycling tour begins towards Fryksta, Kil. Along the shore of Klarälven you will soon reach Grava, with its beautiful church. Then pass Lake Södra Hyn, and after a short while, you will reach the memorial of the first railway in Sweden, built in 1849. Take the opportunity to visit Apertin, with dramatic gullies surrounding the beautiful manor from the 17th century. Here Selma Lagerlöf found inspiration to write about the countess and the cavaliers in “Gösta Berling’s saga”. The journey continues to your first accommodation, the first railway station in Sweden, which has now turned into a hostel.
After breakfast, continue north on a nice gravel road through the forest by Örnäs. At Nilsby, feel free to cycle to the beautiful Nilsby Bridge, which has an amazing view of Lower Fryken as well as Middle Fryken. If you cycle over the bridge and take a little detour of approximately 1,5 kilometers, you can see the thousand-year-old oak, “Kammersrudseken”, which is the oldest tree in Värmland. Continue to the beautiful Hagudden, where you will be able to go for a nice swim. The journey continues along forest- and gravel roads to Bössviken, which was the location of steamer Freja’s salvaged (read more, “Things to see”).Enjoy the beautiful view while cycling along Fryken until you reach Smedsby. In the middle of a meadow, there is Alma Löv Museum. Wander amongst the pavilions and visit the exhibitions and the coffeehouse in the main building. Filled with amazing impressions, enjoy the evening with a nice dinner in the cottage where you will spend the night. Option to take a sauna or to get a massage.
On the third day, you cycle north to Prästbol, where you can visit Östra Ämtevik’s church as well as Selma Lagerlöf’s family grave. At a distance you can see Herresta mansion, which was “Borg” in “Gösta Berling’s saga”. The journey continues along Selma Lagerlöf’s church road, passing Södra Ås to Mårbacka. At 11 am the guided tour of the memorial starts.. Mainly on gravel roads you will reach Sunne and the railway station, where we meet at 3.45 pm. The train leaves at 4.13 pm and arrive in Karlstad at 5.03 pm.
Additional night at Selma Spa, proceed instead to the hotel. A lovely spa experience is waiting with access to sauna, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, gym and workout classes with dinner and breakfast buffet. Check-out from the hotel at 12 pm. We meet at 4.45 at the train station. The train leaves at 4.13 pm and arrive in Karlstad at 5.03 pm.
